Iron Maiden was an audacious debut: raw, fiery, subtly progressive and delivered with utmost passion and power, its songs are all established classics and its finest moments — the exhilarating Prowler , the monumental Phantom Of The Opera , the spine-tingling Remember Tomorrow — are as good as anything Maiden have ever recorded.

And rubbish. The Trooper remains amongst their most recognisable and favourite tunes for good reason, whilst the irrepressible Die With Your Boots On and Flight Of Icarus helped define classic modern metal. It also provoked controversy with its hellish cover art, resulting in the cultural misconception that Iron Maiden and its fans were Satanists.

As always, there are some moments of greatness, but it has too many average ideas thrown at it and after a while it all just sounds the same and drags on too long. That confidence is evidenced by the album opening with instrumental The Ides Of March.

Not even the slightly clunky Quest For Fire can take away from this classic record.
